Skirts
Hooray for the gypsy skirt! They're flattering, come in different styles and you can hide a lot under there! If you've got the body and chutzpah, a pencil skirt is also a sexy option. Dress full skirts with a white t-shirt and scarf but unless you've got unbelievably long legs it's hard looking good wearing a miniskirt after forty.

Dressing down
Cosy clothes that look and feel like a treat, rather than a sloppy afterthought, are available out there. A cosy favourite is the pashmina. These hide a lot of ills if you drape them carefully, and come in such gorgeous colours. In the warmer months they come in handy to drape over the shoulders as a shawl.

Jeans
Jeans form a huge part of my wardrobe but there are rules to consider when seeking out the perfect pair: Try them on - manufacturers have their own sizing system so don't assume they'll fit. Long jeans make legs look longer/slimmer and pocket position can make a huge difference to the size and shape of your bottom.

Boobs
The most persistent challenge in keeping breasts perky is finding the right bra to support them which can dramatically improve your body shape. Some women even sleep in their bras. The biggest mistake women make is to pull bra straps tight to lift breasts which causes shoulder, neck and chest pain and strains breathing.

Arms
Upper arms age in a very frustrating fashion. The best trick for concealing what might be drooping is ditching short-sleeved tees for just-to-elbow sleeves or added cuff. For a glam look team a bustier or strapless dress with a shrug or sequinned shawl. Pilates can also really make a difference to a floppy upper-arm.

Office chic
Styles don't have to be completely fashion led, but don't shun contemporary looks. One of my girlfriends works in the City and invests in key accessories such as sparkly brooches for her lapels to elevate her everyday suit for the evening. I love seeing a woman work a sharp suit with pencil skirt, heels and man's shirt.

Boots
I'm a bootaholic. Cowboy boots are good for full skirts and jeans, knee-high chunky heels are great for jersey dresses and tights, winter dresses if worn with woolly tights and for tucking jeans into. Knee-high flats are fab for winter skirts and slim-fit jeans worn tucked in and shoe boots are great for jeans and smart dark trousers.

Jewels
If you've got any rocks -costume or real diamonds - now is the time to show them off. Pearls with a little black dress is an unbeatable combination. Don't wear your best diamonds out shopping, but for a special night out, a diamond can add that much-needed polish. The same applies to a chunky gold bracelet.

The sin bin
Fashion no-nos after 40: Pale blue and pale green eye-shadow, slogan t-shirts, thongs, culottes, cropped tops, hipster jeans worn to reveal your tummy, pastel shortie anoraks, cream macs, baby-pink lipstick, white skin-tight trousers, thin denier tights, shoes you can't walk in and halter-neck tops.

The face
Every wrinkle tells a story and there's nothing worse than an overly Botoxed face with no expression. The ageing process brings changes to the skin, becoming thinner and finer, losing elasticity and its ability to reflect light. Keep skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water and plump skin with an anti-ageing moisturiser.
